Telematics is in-vehicle technology that captures and transmits data about a vehicle over a mobile network. It goes beyond simple location to include operational data.
What it captures
Where basic GPS answers only where is the vehicle?, telematics adds:
- speed and mileage,
- driver behaviour — harsh braking, acceleration, idling,
- fuel or battery level,
- diagnostic alerts from the vehicle’s systems,
- geofence events — alerts when a vehicle leaves a defined area.
What it requires
Telematics is never software alone. It needs hardware in each vehicle — a device, hard-wired or plugged into the diagnostic port — plus a mobile data subscription, a platform to view the data, and integration with your rental system. That is why it is a roadmap and integration project rather than a built-in feature.
How it would help rental businesses
For rental firms, telematics supports recovery of overdue vehicles, mileage verification, fleet logistics across locations, and maintenance insights. It does not prevent double bookings or set prices — those remain jobs for availability logic and pricing.
